How to Write a Local Ad That Actually Gets Responses
Every day, thousands of local ads go unanswered. Not because nobody needs what's being offered — but because the ad itself fails to communicate three basic things: what it is, where it is, and why the reader should respond. Fix those three things and your response rate goes up dramatically.
The title is 80% of your ad
Most people scanning a classifieds page see your title and nothing else. If the title doesn't answer "what and where" in plain language, they scroll past. You have roughly half a second to earn a click.
The most effective titles follow a simple structure: [What you want/offer] + [Location] + [Key detail]. Here are some real examples of the difference:
| Category | Weak title | Strong title |
|---|---|---|
| Need Help | Help needed please | Need a plumber in Manchester — small leak, urgent |
| Offering | Gardening services available | Experienced gardener — lawn cutting & hedge trimming, Leeds area |
| Need Help | Looking for someone | Need a reliable dog walker, 5 days/week, South Dublin |
| Offering | I can help with stuff | Handyman — flat-pack furniture, shelving, odd jobs — Birmingham |
| General | Swap or sale | Swap: road bike (size M) for mountain bike — Sydney |
Notice that strong titles never use vague language like "help needed" or "services available." Every word earns its place by telling the reader something specific.
What to include in the description
Once someone clicks, your description has about ten seconds to convert them into a reply. Keep it short, structured, and specific. People don't read classifieds — they scan them. Use short paragraphs or simple line breaks, not walls of text.
A description that works typically covers four things:
- What you need or offer — state it plainly in the first sentence
- Key details — hours, budget, frequency, skill level, condition (for items)
- Location specifics — neighbourhood if helpful, not just the city
- How to respond — even a simple "message me with your availability" tells people what to do next
Avoid writing an essay. Two or three short paragraphs is almost always enough. If you find yourself writing more than 200 words, you're probably including information that belongs in the conversation, not the ad.
Choose the right category and contact type
Choosing the right category makes your ad appear to the right searchers. On GetQuickHelp there are three: Need Help (you want something done or provided), Offering (you have a skill or service to give), and General (everything else — swaps, announcements, community notices).
The contact type matters too. People respond to phone ads faster on average, but many prefer message for privacy reasons. If your request is time-sensitive (urgent repairs, same-day tasks), include a phone number. For longer-horizon requests (ongoing tutoring, part-time work), message contact works well.
| Ad type | Best contact method | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Urgent repairs / tradespeople | Phone | Speed matters — people call immediately |
| Services / ongoing work | Message or email | Respondents want to explain their situation first |
| Items / swaps | Message or WhatsApp | People want to ask questions before committing |
| Community notices | Message | No urgency, lower friction preferred |
| Jobs / hiring | Candidates expect to send a message with context |
Location: be specific enough to matter
"London" is not a location — it's a city of 9 million people. "North London near Finsbury Park" is a location. The more specific you are, the more likely you are to attract people who can actually help. Nobody wants to travel an hour for a £15 job.
That said, don't be so specific that you narrow your audience unnecessarily. A street address in the ad is almost never appropriate — save that for after someone responds.
